Washington CH 63, Russell Kentucky 61 (Beasts of the Southeast Shootout at Chesapeake High School)
The Blue Lions gutted out a win against Russell, Ky Saturday night in the Beast of the Southeast opener.
Washington was playing their third game in as many days and came out hot and with a lot of energy, taking a 20-10 lead into the second period, then something happened.
“We started to make a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes” said Coach Shannon Bartruff. “Missed layups, lazy passes and lazy fouls. After trading baskets in the 2nd we took a 33-24 lead to locker room, however we were up by as many as 15 in the second. Sloppy ball handling and missed layups allowed them (Russell) to get back in the game.”
In the 3rd the Lions were outscored 16-9 and clung to a 42-40 lead heading into the fourth.
“It was a back and forth game all the way through the quarter” said Bartruff. “We took a 60-58 lead after two free throws by Conner Eckles with 17.9 seconds to go. We called timeout and talked about not letting their three point shooter loose. They ran a set for him we had a hand in his face and he still made the 3 to give them a one point lead.”
Washington called time out with 3.9 seconds remaining, got the ball to Eckles who drained a three at the buzzer to win the game.
Eckles scored 12 of his game high 19 in the 4th Quarter.
The Lions (8-2) battle McClain Tuesday, head to Chillicothe Friday and take on Xenia Saturday.
